Imagination Software partners with Xerox

Imagination Software (Silver Spring, MD, http://www.imagine@imaginationsoftware.com ) is offering support for Xerox's (Rochester, NY, http://www.xerox.com ) TextBridge 32-bit OCR engine using Imagine ActiveX controls. The engine translates scanned or faxed images, allows users to perform OCR on multiple zones of an image and to set different thresholds. Imagine ActiveX, offspring of the Maryland company, supports image display, print, fax, Internet fax, annotations, scan, OCR/ICR, mark sense, barcode recognition and forms processing. "The strategic partnership between Imagination Software and Xerox enables us to meet the needs of many developers who require an ActiveX or VBX version of our OCR engine," says Wayne Crandall, VP of sales for Xerox DDS software.

A Web workflow solution from Action Technologies (Alameda, CA, http://www.actiontech.com ) enables users to build and deploy collaborative business applications for the extranet and intranets. ActionWorks Metro Version 3.0 delivers an enhanced work management environment for individual users with 20 administrative applications. A standard Web browser grants participation, the WorkLinks feature allows users to receive work notification and status via E-mail and the Process Builder supports process mapping, database definition, business rules and agent creation. Any ODBC-compliant database can be accessed by the software that supports Microsoft and Netscape servers.

JVC has high-capacity storage solution

The high-speed MC-1200 ($12,300) and MC-1600 ($16,000) can be configured with up to six CD-ROM or CD-R drives for a network CD mass storage solution. Features include 8x speed player performance, tray-based disc loading, CD mail slot and 50-disc interchangeable magazines.

Legacy introduces new network servers

Legacy Storage Systems (Markham, Ontario) has introduced a new family of network SmartArray CD-ROM servers. Model CD-16 provides network access to 16 individual CD-ROMs and offers a storage capacity of 10.4 GBs, using four SCSI-2 four-disk autochangers. Models CD-28 and CD-48, with storage of 18.2 GBs and 31.2 GBs, offer access to 28 or 48 CD-ROMs in standing towers. The SmartArray CD supports major platforms and connects directly to Ethernet or token ring networks using an AXIS StorPoint controller. Pricing starts at $4,800.

Watermark used by Iowa public defenders

FileNet's (Costa Mesa, CA, http://www.filenet.com ) Watermark software is streamlining business processes for the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals Fiscal Services Bureau. The bureau implemented the document imaging Windows NT-based software to handle the records management and accounting processes of the Iowa State Public Defender's office, which processed more than 57,000 cases, amounting to 30,000 claims, during the last fiscal-year. Using Watermark's software and a Compaq server, the bureau scans claim documents, stores the images and routes the claim request electronically for review and processing. Data entry time has been reduced by 60% and turn-around time for historical claims drops from three weeks to minutes.

Lanier acquires Quorum Group

Lanier Worldwide (Atlanta, http://www.lanier.com ) has acquired the Quorum Group, a Minneapolis-based legal services company specializing in discovery management, document coding, image scanning and repository services. Lanier will operate the company as Quorum/Lanier within its subsidiary, Lanier Professional Services (LPSI). Quorum's Knowledge Link image management software system will be offered through Lanier as part of "end-to-end litigation support with solutions that handle processes from input to output and everything in-between" according to Wesley Cantrell, CEO of Lanier. Quorum's scanning and indexing technologies will be applied to other LPSI markets, such as the medical transcription outsourcing service.

New service offerings from IBM (Armonk, NY, http://www.ibm.com ) are intended to simplify the processes of installation, migration and support of image, workflow and COLD technologies. Twelve prepackaged offerings comprise the new image and document management services that have been added to IBM's SmoothStart for onsite implementation and startup, and Migration for data, preparation and validation. Ron Fodor, regional services executive for Enterprise Document Management Services, promises that customers will be able to capitalize on the cost reduction and customer service implications of the technologies for the implementation and support of image and document management solutions.

Xerox Engineering Systems joins XNE

Xerox Engineering Systems has joined the Xerox New Enterprise (XNE) organization in order to focus more closely on growing segments of the engineering market. Formed in 1996, XNE was created as a new management paradigm within Xerox (Rochester, NY, http://www.xerox.com ) to manage businesses that fall outside the company's main competencies or target markets. As a XNE member, Xerox Engineering Systems has access to Xerox developments and technologies, while being granted the flexibility of a smaller entrepreneurial company. The engineering division becomes the largest of the 10 XNE companies.

InterTech Information Management goes global

InterTech Information Management (Atlanta, http://www.intertech.com ) goes global with the opening of a European branch in Holland. Rolf Ornee has been named VP of European operations and will oversee the distribution of InterTech's DocuPact in 15 European Union countries, Switzerland and parts of the Middle East and Africa. The Atlanta-based information management solution provider intends to establish other satellite offices in Europe, the first of which will be located in the United Kingdom.
